Whether you are prepping a bolt-action rifle for a precision hunt or setting up an AR-style platform for the range, a rock-solid mount is the bridge between you and your target. If your scope isn’t properly secured and leveled, no amount of technical skill will compensate for the resulting inaccuracies.

The Essentials: What You Need
Before you start, gather these tools to ensure a professional finish:

● Leveling System: A bubble level (or a specialized scope-leveling kit) to ensure the reticle is perfectly vertical.
● Degreaser & Cloth: To clean mounting surfaces.
● Blue Threadlocker (Loctite): Optional but recommended for vibration-heavy environments.
Mounting on a Bolt-Action Rifle
Bolt-action setups usually require a two-piece base or a one-piece rail. The focus here is on alignment and clearance.
1. Prepare the Receiver: Clean the top of the receiver and the bottom of your bases with a light degreaser. Apply a small amount of threadlocker to the base screws and torque them to the manufacturer’s specifications.
2. Position the Rings: Install your bottom ring halves. If using a two-piece base, ensure they are perfectly aligned.
3. Place the Scope: Set the scope into the bottom rings. Slide the scope forward or backward to find your correct eye relief—you should see a full, crisp picture without stretching your neck or crowding the stock.
4. Level the Reticle: This is the most critical step. Place a level on the flat top of your receiver and another on the elevation turret cap. Adjust the scope until both bubbles are perfectly centered.
5. Secure the Caps: Tighten your ring caps in a “criss-cross” or “X” pattern to ensure even pressure. Use your torque driver—over-tightening can crush the scope tube.
Mounting on an AR-Style Rifle
AR platforms generally utilize a one-piece cantilever mount. Because the receiver and handguard can sometimes be at different heights, the cantilever design is essential for achieving the correct eye relief and height-over-bore.
1. Position the Mount: Place your cantilever mount on the top rail (Picatinny). Ensure it is pushed forward against the rail slot to account for recoil. Tighten the cross-bolts to the manufacturer’s torque specs.
2. Eye Relief Adjustment: The AR’s buffer tube and charging handle make eye relief trickier. Position the scope so that when you are in a natural shooting stance, you have the full, unobstructed sight picture immediately upon bringing the rifle to your shoulder.
3. Leveling: AR rails are generally very stable. Use a plumb line (a string with a weight) at least 20–30 yards away. While looking through the scope, align the vertical crosshair with the hanging string. Once aligned, level the rifle and tighten the ring caps incrementally.
4. Final Check: Ensure your scope is not touching the charging handle or preventing the ejection port from clearing.
● Respect the Torque: Never “hand-tighten” with a standard Allen key if you can avoid it. Over-torquing is the #1 cause of damaged optics. Always check the scope manual for the recommended inch-pounds (usually 15–25 in-lbs for rings).
● Check for Cant: If your scope is canted (tilted) even slightly, your long-range shots will drift significantly to one side. Take your time during the leveling process.
● Function Test: Before heading to the range, do a “dry-fire” check. Close your eyes, shoulder the rifle, and open your eyes. If you don’t have a perfect sight picture immediately, adjust your eye relief before firing a single shot.
